The first recorded inhabitants of the area where the Chumash people beginning during ancient times. The name of the area originated with its first inhabitants. The city began its life as the town of Nordoff, named for the famed writer Charles Nordoff. Nordoff was renamed Ojai in 1917. However, the public high school still carries the Nordoff name. Development in the area began to boom with the arrival of Edward Libbey owner of the Libby Glass Company. Libbey fell in love with the valley area and began expansion efforts, as well as beautification efforts for the town. The historic arcade and bell tower still remain from those early days in Ojai.

According to the 2010 United States Census Ojai is home to approximately 7,461 and has a population density of 1,695.3 people per square mile. The majority of the population, 97.6%, live in the 3,111 households in the city, and 28.2% of those households had children’ Ojai enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers. The housing market in Ojai is alive and well with many options like homes for sale, apartments and condominiums to rent or lease.
