Oxnard is a city located along the Southern Coast of California. It is the most largely populated city in Ventura County and is the 19th most populated city in the state. The city is part of the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura metropolitan area and sits on the edge of the Oxnard Plain. The Chumash tribe were the areas first people, and then the area was claimed for Spain in 1542. Ranching took hold in the area and it became part of the state of California at its establishment in 1850. Barley, Lima beans and sugar beets were among the early agriculture efforts in the area. The first railroad station in Oxnard was built in the spring of 1898. The city of Oxnard was incorporated in the summer of 1903 and the first public library opened in 1907.
